Allyship in Action: How to Push Back on Anti-LGBTQ Laws
A recent report from The Movement Advancement Project confirms a growing and disturbing two-year trend: A record number of state legislatures have introduced bills that attack the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly transgender Americans. This legislation targets harm toward already marginalized individuals and seeks to codify discrimination. How can your company respond to anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in a positive and meaningful way? And what’s the best way to do so in an era when some elected officials are also lashing out at corporations they deem “too woke”?
Let’s take a closer look at this legislative trend and the best, most effective steps you and your organization can take to push back.
How prevalent is anti-LGBTQ+ legislation?
In 2021 and again in 2022, records were set for the number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced and the number of states introducing them. According to an analysis by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and the Equality Federation, 315 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced in state legislatures in the United States in 2022. As one example, state lawmakers in North Carolina are currently advancing roughly a dozen bills that opponents say target LGBTQ+ people.
